Just acquired in South Carolina....a nice, clean, original car now being finished in our workshops.
Runs and drives great....not surprising as it has the best engine one could fit to an MGA...a relatively rare early 1800cc MGB engine....98 hp instead of the stock 83 and with more torque. Remember, the later twin cams were only rated at 100hp and were a pain in the neck to keep in tune. This car? A smooth powerful engine and, with the tach drive on the back of the block is visually identical to the original 1622 Mk II engine. Our tests: 155-170 psi compression in every cylinder, 60 psi oil pressure, no smoke, SUs nicely tuned, no oil leaks, and quiet valves. e dropped the sump, cleaned it and theoil pick up, checked the rod bearings and all looked fine. Excellent clutch and trans, tight front suspension (bushings all look fairly new), brakes work well (and we just replaced pads and shoes, some brake lines and one wheel cylinder), wire wheels with nearly new radials, everything works electrically (wipers, lights, horn, heater, turn signals, etc.), mostly new chrome, all gauges work fine, very usable top and side curtains, tonneau. Even has its original factory oil cooler.
No rust underneath, frame and inner sills looks great, same with battery boxes, wood floors are solid. New red carpets just installed and very good leather seats. The interior really defines the term 'patina' and really doesn't need anything. Same with trunk and engine bay.
Body is straight, doors and panels fit nicely, not perfect but VERY good and, at the moment, the white paint is amply presentable. We are just finishing a few details and the car is available now. Price: $17,500. Give us a week or two to finish the car, new black paint, better detail work, some additional new parts....price will be $23,000. Either way, a wonderful example of this last (and in some people's minds, best) of the MGA series.
When done in beautiful black acylic, with the lovely red leather interior, the new chrome, the more powerful 1800cc engine and in excellent running and driving condition and this will be a VERY nice MGA.
