...an alloy bodied SuperSport that came our way a few years ago from R.I.
Arrived with correct body number (matching to the factory records...note this in the enclosed photos) in place, with the ORIGINAL BRG paint (NO BONDO, damage, modification, etc.), complete (even with the rare but correct 42 DCOE Webers and original brass coolant header tank on the firewall), but unrestored.
Car came on a new factory chassis (a very common restoration item with Morgans...being made of thin sheet metal, they tend to rust through after 30-40 years), excellent wood body framing, ALL ORIGINAL alloy body (including original distinctive Weber bonnet scoop), original aluminum fenders, lowline body, rebuilt highly modified TR engine (forged high compression pistons, polished con rods, fully balanced, gas flowed head, 3/4 race cam, tubular headers, 42 DCOE Webers, electronic ignition, aluminum flywheel, new clutch...hasn't been on a dyno but must be every bit of 135-140hp), excellent Moss gearbox, 72 spoke chrome wire wheels, disc brakes, all new interior, new wiring and electricals, beautifully refinished wood dash, all rebuilt gauges, new weather equipment, new chrome, the list goes on and on.
Having driven this car quite a bit, I must say, it is a wonderful blend of 'vintage' and 'high performance.' Feels incredibly light (as it is), very powerful, smooth, and exciting. No doubt, the most exotic, most interesting Morgan ever built.
And then there is the oft told tale of the SuperSport at LeMans......
(and here is the 'official' story which, I understand, needs to be taken with a gain of salt)
Seems Chris Lawrence was doing a brisk business tuning TR engines and thought a nice, light, alloy bodied Morgan would do quite well in international competition with one of his modified engines. So he made a deal with Peter Morgan to fit his 'tuned' engines in modified lightweight Morgans.
Remember, this was WELL before such famous combinations as 'AC Cobras' or Shelby GT350s came on the scene. All of these Morgan goings-on, back in 1961.
Lawrence was doing well racing his Moggie even to the point of being in the lead at the Nurgburgring against stiff Porsche opposition. And then, so the tale goes, he entered his SuperSports at the 24 hours of LeMans only to be told 'all you have here, sir, is a pre war car with disc brakes!' And refused entry.
After much success during 1961, the entry wasn't refused in 1962 and than the tale becomes a validated story....after 24 hours, the Morgan crossed the finish line in 10th place with a 1st place in the under 2 liter GT class. Beating the factory Alfa and Porsche teams. An incredible victory and one certainly well deserved. In the 'pre war' car with disc brakes.
Books generally quote 101 of these fantastic cars being built. We have a copy of the car's original build sheet showing it in the BRG in which we found the car.
Is this car ALL original down to the original oil filter and ignition key? Do all of the numbers match? Is it the finest, most original SuperSports in the world? No, it isn't (but everything important is 'correct' original OR identical to original). How many restored Morgans (or, for that matter, other classics) have the original...everything?
Consider this: what makes a Morgan SuperSports different from a standard Morgan Plus 4? Clearly the modified engine, Weber carbs, etc. But what REALLY makes a SuperSports special is the low line, aluminum alloy body with side Weber scoop. And with the validation of the original paint (the way this car first came into our hands) and original factory body number stamping, in our opinion this is unquestionably an original car, with a new chassis and other appropriate replacement parts.
If you want the most interesting, most beautiful, and most exciting of all Morgans, this is it. A rare opportunity.
