Found by a friend and entrusted to us to 'bring it back alive.' Was sitting in dry storage for around fifty years and has covered only 33,000 miles since new. All the more remarkable, for this kind of car, is left hand drive and probably originally sold in the USA.
For a week, we (in the office and workshops) have been admiring the car...............while the rubber floor mats are dirty and there is some dirt in the original carpets, ALL will be cleaned ASAP. And as for the rest, perfect original headliner, excellent metal and wood dash, glove boxes, and wood interior trim, all switches and other plastic pieces almost like new. Really incredible.
Body is excellent, not a spot of rust, dents, scrapes, or anything else. Hood, trunk, and doors are all aluminum and once we blend in some matching paint and spray the entire car in clear, it should shine like new. (similar to the photos showing it on a drizzly day) And nothing other than inconsequential surface rust underneath. Even front suspension bushings look like new.
Now it appears that someone, perhaps a long time in this car's history, suspected a blown head gasket. As, in the trunk, neatly arranged, are the engine's pushrods and head bolts. But otherwise, everything looks quite 'together' in the engine bay. Even the original wiring.
Mufflers look like swiss cheese, bumper chrome is rusty and flaking off at spots BUT all of the trim chrome, around each window as an example, all appears to be near perfect.
Out of curiosity, we installed a battery and the car came alive. Turn signals and lights working, ignition and headlight light on the dash lit up, and when I pressed the dash button for the oil level switch, the gauge's needle moved. And even the brake lights worked.
So, we are either going offer it for sale (and it is for sale) or begin working on it. Probably both. We acquired a DVD with a complete shop manual, found sources for parts both in Canada and the UK, stuck four decent MGB tires on the wheels, make sure the brakes were not stuck, and our next step is the exterior, match and blend paint over bare aluminum spots, clean the entire car, and get it to shine as in the photos outside in the rain.
Of course, we can offer this car for sale and be contracted to do the work. Chrome the bumpers OR just grind/sand and paint them silver or chrome. Clean the interior (and it needs very 33k miles, we would guess there is very little wear on pistons, bore, and crank journals. With luck, not needing any machine ship work and few parts.
The car: 2.1 liter six cylinder engine known to be very smooth. 75hp giving a top speed of around 78 mph, four speed transmission, drum brakes, tube shocks, quite simple. But when you close any of the doors, sounds like a new Bentley. And beautiful detail work. Would be a dandy car for pleasure driving and taking it to shows. With a driver, five passengers and lots of room in the boot for chairs and a cooler.
To call it 'solid' is an understatement. But beyond the engine, brakes, and mufflers, not a lot of work left to get it up and going. Inquire for details
